Dell’s First Multitouch Rugged Laptop get official

Dell Latitude XT2 XFR

On Tuesday,october 27,2009,  Dell started to shipping its first rugged laptop with a multitouch screenthe Latitude XT2 XFR. The Latitude XT2 XFR is the thinnest and lightest rugged touch-screen laptop. The new laptop has been designed and engineered for high performance and strengthened its usability in harsh working environments. It will be starting out at $3,599.

The Latitude XT2 XFR comes with a 12.1-inch four-finger-input multitouch display that can be used to record data, manipulate images, zoom into maps or scroll through documents. And the laptop weighs 5.4 pounds (2.45 kilograms) with a four-cell battery and solid-state drive. It has the options of 4-cell,6-cell or 9-cell battery, and the laptop can run for up to six hours with just 6-cell battery.

The Latitude XT2 XFR is powered by an Intel ultra-low-voltage Core 2 Duo SU9600 chip, which runs at 1.6GHz and includes 3MB of cache. It supports 1GB of RAM (which can be up to 5GB ), a 160GB hard drive, Intel GMA 4500 graphics and an external read-only DVD drive.The laptop includes multiple wireless connevtivities such as  Wi-Fi networking, mobile broadband options and GPS.

The Latitude XT2 XFR has a most prominent feature. Compression-sealed and rugged I/O doors, LCD, and keyboard, provide an IP54 level of Ingress Protection, or resistance to moisture, heat and dust such as dropping from up to three feet up, bringing toughened features such as covered ports and a high-powered cooling system that can better deal with heat and dust.

“The Latitude XT2 XFR is more than a laptop, it’s a key part of our mobile command and data-center solutions for field service, defense and first-responder customers,” said Paul Bell, president, Dell Global Public-Sector Business. “These unique solutions, coupled with our service model, make those communities more effective, enabling them to focus on their core missions instead of managing technology.”

While the Latitude XT2 XFR has no Windows 7 option just with Microsoft’s Windows Vista OS. The company is beginning to adding the Windows 7 to the laptop.

The Latitude XT2 XFR is currently available in the North American and European market, but we  still don’t know when it will go worldwide.
