Nintendo‘s new DSi handheld has proven to be quite popular in the West as well as its home territory of Japan. After selling over 500,000 units in its first month of availability in Japan, the company has moved over 300,000 units in both the European and US markets within its first two days of availability in each. According to the latest figures from GfK-ChartTrack, the new Nintendo DSi sold 92,000 units in the UK in its first 48 hours of availability, making it the fourth fastest selling UK console ever. Next week’s launch of the DSi is set to also be the launch of a steady flow of DSiWare games.
Buried beneath the news that the Wii is getting a Bonsai-trimming game for its downloadable WiiWare service this morning was the announcement that Nintendo is going to be supporting downloads for the upcoming DSi aggressively.

Rather than hoping that the merits of its soon-to-be-released handheld will sell themselves (a strategy commonly referred to as the “Game Boy Micro Maneuver”), Nintendo is apparently plotting a huge North American marketing campaign for the DSi. The company has already developed a schedule of television, online and in-store advertisements for the shutterbugged device from now until Christmas, making it Nintendo’s biggest ad campaign of the year. While Nintendo has been pretty good so far with the Game Boys of yore and the DS / DS Lite at keeping backwards compatibility pretty much at a maximum, the DSi’s added functionality and processing power is going to test that a bit. At the Game Developers Conference panel titled “Inspiration Behind Nintendo DSi Development,” Nintendo’s project lead Matato Kuwahara revealed that there will be a variety of ways to distribute Nintendo DSi software to users, both digitally distributed as well as via retail packaged software.
